Story by Russell Vannozzi of Mainstreet Preps

May 25 provided a whirlwind of an evening for longtime Brentwood assistant football coach Clint Finch.

Around 6:30 p.m., Ron Crawford called Finch to let him know he was stepping down as Brentwood?s head football coach to become the defensive coordinator at Christian Brothers High in Memphis.

In a Zoom meeting less than two hours later, Brentwood principal Kevin Keidel asked Finch to be Crawford?s successor.

?It happened pretty suddenly,? Finch said. ?I immediately said yes. This is my 28th year of coaching and (being a head coach) is something I?ve wanted to do for a long time.?

inch, though surprised, was not caught unprepared.

He has spent 13 total seasons on the Brentwood staff ? including the last six as offensive coordinator and associate head coach ? and was viewed internally as the heir apparent to the head job.

Crawford once even suggested Finch as his eventual replacement in a casual conversation with Keidel and Brentwood athletic director Joe Blair. All three men were in agreement.

?Everyone felt strongly that if I was ever going to leave, Clint was the man for the job,? Crawford said. ?It wasn?t off the cuff. It was just our realization of how ready Clint (was) to be a head coach anywhere.?
